South Tyneside Hospital was established as an NHS Trust in 1993 to provide community and hospital services to the people of South Tyneside and surrounding areas.
O’Brien originally provided waste services on the site in January 2013 with the aim of assisting the Trust to be more cost efficient, improve recycling rates and provide a reliable waste service. O’Brien has developed a strong relationship with South Tyneside Hospital and as testament to our commitment the contract was retained in 2015.
Waste streams produced on site include domestic general waste and dry mixed recycling, with approximately 300 tonnes of waste being collected each year.

Innovations
South Tyneside Hospital were not segregating large volumes of waste before O’Brien commenced the contract. We provided colour coded internal bins, which are infection control certificated, and were placed on every ward in the hospital. Signage, tool box talks and staff training and awareness days were also carried out to ensure maximum segregation of recycling occurs on site.
O’Brien carries out regular site visits to document the areas performing well and also areas which need improvement, this has led to an increase in overall recycling and in turn reduces cost. Prior to the contract commencing a full site survey was carried out to identify every location where a container was required. This ensured a smooth implementation to the contract.
It is essential South Tyneside Hospital receive a reliable service, they own a compactor for use on site and if for any reason the compactor is out of service we have provision in place for additional same day services to assist the site.
